    Waterproof vs. Water-Resistant Zippers: What Actually Keeps Water Out

    "Waterproof zipper" is one of the most misused terms in our trade. The same two words get stuck on a rain jacket, a dry bag and a diving suit — three products with completely different sealing needs. When a brand orders the wrong one, the result is a leak, a return, or a marketing claim that doesn't survive the first downpour. This guide explains, from the factory floor, what a water-resistant zipper actually does, where a truly sealed closure is needed, and how to specify the right one.

    It is written by Primo (Wenzhou Primo Zipper Group), a custom zipper factory that has made nylon, metal, plastic and specialty sealing zippers for about forty years. Because we also build the zipper-making machines ourselves, we work with every construction in-house — so the points below are practical, not marketing.

    Why an ordinary zipper leaks

    A standard zipper is not built to stop water, for two reasons. First, water passes straight through the small gaps between the teeth. Second, a normal woven tape wicks moisture along the fabric, so even if the teeth held, the tape would carry water through. That is why a plain coil or metal zipper on outerwear will let rain in along the closure no matter how well the garment fabric performs.

    Water-resistant zippers: how they work

    A water-resistant (reverse-coil) zipper solves both problems. A film — typically TPU (polyurethane) — is laminated over the tape so it no longer wicks, and the zipper is built "reversed": the smooth, coated face points outward, so rain runs off the surface instead of sitting in the teeth. The result is a closure that sheds rain and splashing well.

    Best for: outerwear, softshells, sportswear, backpacks, bags and general outdoor gear that has to handle rain, spray and wet weather.

    Three honest limits worth telling your customers:

    • It resists rain and splash — it is not built for immersion. Holding back a downpour is a different job from staying sealed underwater.
    • Water can still enter at the slider and the two ends. The tape and face are protected, but the moving slider and the stops are the weak points; many brands add a storm flap or "garage" over them.
    • Real performance depends on the whole build, not just the word "waterproof" — the film, the coating, the slider and how the zipper is set into the garment all matter.

    Sealed and airtight zippers: the next level

    When a product must stay dry under immersion, pressure or contamination — a drysuit, a hazmat or protective garment, marine and technical equipment — a water-resistant build is not enough. That calls for an airtight / sealing zipper, which uses a continuous sealing element rather than open teeth. These closures are stiffer, usually need lubrication to run smoothly and last, and are specified by their seal type and the pressure they must hold. Because the requirement is so specific, sealing zippers are almost always made to the customer's spec and tested to it.

    Match the zipper to the real exposure

    The fastest way to choose correctly is to be honest about how wet the product will actually get:

    • Occasional rain, light splash → a standard nylon coil or molded plastic zipper, often with a storm flap, is enough.
    • Steady rain, spray, wet outdoor use → a water-resistant reverse-coil zipper with a TPU-laminated tape.
    • Immersion, pressure, hazardous or sealed environments → an airtight / sealing zipper, built and verified to spec.

    Don't ship a claim you can't back

    "Waterproof" on its own is not a specification — it is a word that means different things to different buyers, and an unsupported claim is a warranty problem waiting to happen. If your product needs to meet a defined level of protection, tell your factory the real target: is it rain and splash, or immersion? Is there a test method or rating the buyer expects? With that, a capable factory can build to the requirement and verify it, rather than printing a generic label and hoping. We would rather under-promise on a sample and have it pass in the field than the reverse.

    Quick reference

    • Plain coil / metal / plastic → not water-stopping on its own; fine for dry use or with a storm flap.
    • Water-resistant (reverse coil + TPU film) → rain and splash; outerwear, bags, outdoor gear.
    • Airtight / sealing → immersion, pressure, protective and technical use; made to spec.
